Chakras 101: The First Chakra (Root Chakra or Muladhara)

Chakras 101: The First Chakra (Root Chakra or Muladhara)

The root chakra or muladhara (“root of existence”) sits at the perineum, where the legs join the body. The chakras, as written before, are seven in number with the root (first) up to the crown at the top of the head (seventh).

This chakra has always been very interesting to me, as I’ve taken great care to write and teach about the chakras from my own learned experience, teachings and many spiritual counseling and healings over 30 years.

The root chakra is not so much about affecting waking, cognitive thinking as it is with being a “gateway " to holding a physical existence and physical being. (holding your physical body in space and time). When writing/teachings about the chakras and as we go along in these blogs, you’ll find that my research points to chakras two through six as affecting those cognitive abilities much more than chakras one or seven.

Think of a gateway like a bridge that joins two dimensions: physical and astral, and that we exist simultaneously in both. The root chakra is what “roots” us in this dimension with our physical bodies.

The great paradox of all the chakras is that each represents the individuation of our spiritual/physical nature, yet none are limited to space/time. The root chakra, as a gateway to physical form holds our beingness in this dimension; shapes it, forms it to life on this planet as we know it.

It is said that the kundalini energy (the sleeping serpent of spiritual awakening) sits within the root chakra, waiting to be awakened. I don’t see it in the same way, but each chakra in most people is dormant, and with spiritual practices can be awakened, although not necessarily in any specific order. Kundalini yoga practices, when exercised with an experienced (awakened) teacher and done safely, can awaken higher orders of spiritual awareness within you.

The root chakra, when meditated upon, “grounds” you in the here and now, where you will feel more empowered and self-realized. Its higher aspects are firmity of being and being grounded in the body.
